What we do

Innovation & Systems Change

Some problems have already defeated the standard response. NoviThea reframes the problem, designs a response with the people inside it, and tests whether the response holds in the system it has to work in.

New is not the point. Working is the point

This work is for a problem that needs to be understood differently, an approach that has stopped delivering, or a commitment large enough that somebody should learn something before it is made.

  • What is the problem before an intervention is designed?
  • Whose experience, knowledge and constraints need to shape the work?
  • Where might change be possible, and what effects should be watched?
  • What can be tested before resources are committed at scale?

Ways of working within this

  • Problem framing

Understanding a problem before designing an intervention, questioning assumptions and identifying its structural and behavioural dimensions.

  • Co-design

Working with relevant users, communities, practitioners and institutions so needs and constraints shape the approach from the beginning.

  • Systems analysis

Examining relationships between actors, incentives, institutions and outcomes to find where change is possible and where feedback effects will bite.

  • Experimentation

Testing concepts, pilots or prototypes through iterative work that creates learning before a larger-scale investment is made.

  • Intervention and service design

Translating evidence and user needs into practical workflows, tools or delivery models when they offer a useful response.

  • Responsible technology

Assessing whether technology genuinely adds value, with attention to safety, accessibility, privacy, ethics and long-term viability.

  • Product development

Building a reusable tool — digital, physical, educational or hybrid — where a challenge recurs and a one-off intervention will not hold. We build only when there is a reason to.

  • Learning and adaptation

Examining what appears useful, under what conditions, and what would need to change before an approach is adapted or taken further.

Build with the system, not around it

A response that routes around an institution has to be maintained by someone, and usually is not. We ask early who owns the thing afterwards, what it costs them, and which existing incentive it cuts against, because that is what decides whether it is still running in two years.

Who this is for

Public institutions, funders, civil-society organisations, research teams, businesses and partnerships that need a response to a problem the usual approach has not solved.

From testing to taking something further

Early experimentation is only useful when it leaves a clearer basis for the next decision. The work needs to stay connected to the people, systems and conditions that will determine whether an approach can be used.

  • A problem frame that is open to challenge, especially where the first proposed solution answers the wrong question.
  • Participation that gives relevant people influence over the work, not simply a chance to react after key decisions have been made.
  • Small enough tests to make learning possible, but realistic enough to reveal the operational and institutional conditions that matter.
  • A considered view of what would need to change before a concept is adapted, invested in further or deliberately set aside.

Discuss an innovation challenge

Begin with the challenge, the people affected and the practical conditions an approach would need to meet.
